As mentioned last week, we’re celebrating another long-standing and multi-generational employee’s birthday. Randy Hayes is one of the few left on our team that knew all four generations of management and actually has deeper historical roots with this company than anyone.
Randy’s father, Lloyd Hayes Sr., started working here back when the business was operating as Motor City Auto Parts, before Dom Sr. and Mickey even purchased the yard for their own expansion. Randy’s been coming here since he was a child, and we have a photo to prove it: the picture with the little guy (middle-right) is our Randy standing with his dad (middle-left). Randy became a part-time employee one summer after some innocent horseplay with friends led to a tragic accident, pushing his mother to send him to work with his dad at age 12 for his own safety. By age 16, Randy decided he had enough of school and started his full-time career in our tire shop.
When we asked Randy if there was a memory that stood out to him, he shared an encounter with “joker” Dom Sr. he had as a teenager. Dom playfully went to pay Randy with a lone $2 bill, but upon closer inspection, he was actually holding a $1000 bill. After having a laugh, Dom met him in the middle with his correct pay.
It’s now been over 50 years and Randy is still our primary loader operator, continuing to bring light into our office with his goofy antics, hearty chuckle, and stories of the old days. Over the years, Randy’s son and grandson have also been our employees, so the Veteres aren’t the only family that have been here for four generations!
Please join us in wishing Randy a very happy birthday!
